Another Way We're Going Green
Submitted by Laura on January 15, 2008 - 13:26.
Some of you may have happened across the Green Business link on the Distinctive Fabric website and read about the ways our company is running an eco-friendly business. Here's an update on our latest Go Green project: As stated on our website we now sell remnant and discontinued fabrics to you, our customers, rather than just throwing them away. But what about the pre-cut swatches? There aren't a lot of projects needing 3.5”x5” pieces and there isn't enough of any one fabric to be useful for projects like quilts that could use those small pieces. So what happens to them? At the moment we have boxes of old swatches being stored while we look for a way to reuse them. But about 200 of those swatches have found a new home decorating the walls of our swatch room! It's very simply done, each swatch stapled at the top to the wall behind it, any larger pieces use two staples to attach to the wall and the pieces around it. There are gaps where the wall shows through and if a strong enough wind comes through the pieces dance and flutter. Even though it was quickly done and each edge doesn't line up perfectly with the pieces around it I love the overall effect! Instead of dull, plain walls my workspace is now surrounded by splashes of color made up of the very pieces I send out to our customers every day! And even better I was able to reuse all these swatches that might end up in a landfill otherwise to create a bit of art and beauty – my own personal, creative contribution to our company Going Green.
